Apollo

Apollo Pools, Inc. was founded in 1969 by a youthful and energetic entrepreneur, Luke Hertzog. The company was named "Apollo" by Mr. Hertzog's first wife and her close friend. The ladies chose the name Apollo because of NASA's Apollo Space Program, and because Apollo is also the Greek God of the Sun. What could be more appropriate!

In the Beginning

Our first 20 years or so were dedicated mostly to construction of new inground pools, garages, home additions, sun rooms, decks, and general home renovation projects. The first store location was in an old grocery store located in beautiful downtown Stony Creek Mills. That location is now a residence. All of our construction and retail sales took place here for many years - and we even built an indoor inground display pool inside the building - and it still exists today (empty and under a floor, though)! Luke's son, Scott, one of our current owners, used to play in this store after school when he was just a little guy.

North of Reading

As time passed, and with the addition of BioGuard brand pool and spa chemicals, we quickly became Berks County's first choice for pool and spa owners to shop for chemicals and supplies. Our display garage on 5th Street Highway in Laureldale evolved into a retail convenience store and water analysis lab, and has been actively supporting the needs of our customers in the northern suburbs of Reading since 1972. We've always had a service department providing openings and closings, repairs, liner replacements, and other general projects.

Pizza

In the early 1980's we moved from Stony Creek into our present showroom and warehouse location at 3711 Perkiomen Ave. in Exeter Township. This location was a small pizza restaurant when we moved in, and we turned the pizza on top of our sign into a swimming pool! The business was growing steadily, and things were going rather well. By the time Scott was around 12 years old, and with his inquisitive nature, he learned how to test water using our first computerized system - Apollo Pools has always been on the cutting edge of technology! We've made multiple additions to our current building, and constructed two warehouses since those early days.

A Lady's Touch

In the mid 1980's, Luke met his current wife, Ann, and her daughter Kathy, one of our current owners. As our family grew, so did our business! Ann brought with her excitement and energy, and coupled with her wisdom and business savvy, Ann was largely responsible for our strong entry into the spa and above ground pool marketplace. Kathy and Ann brought Apollo freshness of ideas and excitement, fun, and flair. Kathy and Ann brought in new product lines for the home and backyard paradise including very unique gifts, flags, outdoor statuary, and lots of other interesting and fun things for our customers. The two ladies also brought our stores a new and attractive store design. No more brown carpet and paint! The men were out building pools and the ladies took care of customers and our day to day business!

Scott and Kathy

By the 1990's Scott and Kathy were energetic and in their early 20's - putting in lots of hours and growing with the family business. While the company kept evolving and expanding, so were their abilities to better lead Apollo into the next century. Kathy developed our retail business while Scott built pools, repaired spas and hot tubs, and developed our service department. As time passed, Luke and Ann gradually began stepping aside into partial retirement while still offering their much appreciated guidance, wisdom, knowledge, and caring. They still help out from time to time when we're very busy, so stop in and you just might get to meet the original Mr. & Mrs. Apollo!

Today Kathy and Scott manage all the day to day business and ownership duties. Kathy supervises both retail and office staff, and loves to be out in the store helping our customers! Scott still likes to get dirty! When he's not helping Kathy or our staff, he focuses on our service and renovation/installation department, and outside sales. Before Luke and Ann decided to retire fully, Scott and Kathy began hiring and developing additional personnel who today assist in customer service and with running the business smoothly. We offer custom liner replacements and safety cover installations along with major rehab renovations and repairs, new filter systems, and all kinds of automation.
